Maize, also known as corn, produces both male and female flowers on the same plant. The male flowers are located at the top of the plant and form long, slender structures called tassels that release pollen into the air. The female flowers, or ears, are located lower on the plant and develop into the corn cob.
Each ear of maize is covered in numerous silky strands or styles that catch the pollen released by the tassels. The pollen then travels down the styles to fertilize the ovules within the ear, ultimately producing kernels of corn.
Maize flowers come in various colors, ranging from greenish-yellow to reddish-brown. They typically bloom in the summer months and require warm temperatures and plenty of moisture to grow and produce a healthy harvest.
